I played trumpet from 5th grade through my senior year of high school. Concert band, marching band, jazz band, pit orchestra for the school's musicals, and some 'side stuff' with small groups. I started out on a Yamaha student model, then begged my parents for a silver King 601. Well, I got it, and loved how it played. After school, I continued to play guitar, but didn't continue with trumpet. Both of my horns were loaned out to other family members for their kids, and neither have been seen again.
Fast-forward to now. My step-son played trumpet in the school band last year (4th grade) and really enjoyed it. We opted to rent to clear the 'what if' phase, and he wants to continue. So, I picked up a King 601 in Silver that I feel I got for a decent price. Based on what I believe the serial number is, I would have pegged it to have been around '85, but now I'm not certain. I've read that many of these horns, pre-2000, had a two digit code before the six digit serial number.
Mine does not. I have read that the last three of the serial number is stamped at the bottom of the second valve.
Mine says USA there. The guide on the first valve slide is most definitely different than the one that was on my horn, and mine was 83/84 vintage. My serial number also happens to be one that could be read 'in either direction'. Based on other serial numbers on other King horns, that can NOT be read in either direction, I -believe- that the serial number starts at the top of the valve and is read downward toward the bottom.
How can I better identify the true age of this horn? And, where might I be able to buy a replacement guide for the third valve slide (and the screw to hold it in)? I've seen the links that show correlation of serial number to year, but I don't know how reliable it is. The horn I have appears to be of the newer strain, but the serial number seems to imply that it's older. I would really like some help if anyone is able. Honestly, folks don't pay much attention to year and vintage for most horns after 1980. Bach, they do a little because of the strike and because Bach is popular. But, King, Benge, Conn don't get much attention after their prime eras faded in the late 70's - or before (in the case of Conn when they left Indiana) because people don't think of the later horns with the same regard as the originals (sometimes for good reason).
Add that to the fact that the King 601 was a student model. Honestly, there are rarely good records kept for student models as far as serial numbers, either by players and often also by the companies. Bundy, for example, is a total mess as far as dating serial numbers. People sometimes ask but it's a hopeless task as they are so random and there is no system. I don't know if this is the case with King. Not surprising, more people care about professional models horns.
There aren't many threads about dating Bach TR300s, because frankly, no one cares. Fortunately, the King 601 is generally a much better horn.
Unfortunately, there apparently isn't much more info out there on it. You best bet at this point would be to contact Selmer-Conn, which owns King, and see what they say, but there's little guarantee that you'll get a response. Honestly, I'd just not worry about the specific vintage and enjoy the fact it's a good horn.
The parts are probably available through your friendly local repair guy or shop. UMI era parts aren't hard to get a hold of from what I've heard. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet Selmer Radial Bb Trumpet Yamaha 6335S Bb Trumpet Besson 709 Bb Trumpet Bach 184L Bb Cornet Yamaha 731 Bb Flugelhorn ember1205 New Member Joined: 07 Sep 2013 Posts: 5 Posted: Mon Sep 09, 2013 1:17 pm Post subject: Thanks for the reply. I had seen the link you posted as one of a couple that seem to generally confirm those numbers.
As you mentioned: 'UMI era parts aren't hard to get a hold of from what I've heard. Kd Max Crack Keygen Autocad. ' Without being able to ascertain the vintage of this horn, I can't tell if it's pre-UMI or not. The first valve slide ring does NOT resemble the one I had on my horn (vintage 83-ish), but the serial number would seem to imply that it's a 1985.
My original horn would likely have been pre-UMI where this one likely is not. Also, for the purposes of properly valuing the horn, the pre-UMI would be of higher value. While I don't believe that this one is pre-UMI, I would like to know for sure (the serial number can be read in both directions, so it COULD be a later 70's vintage, although I doubt it).

I don't understand. Ember1205 New Member Joined: 07 Sep 2013 Posts: 5 Posted: Mon Sep 09, 2013 3:46 pm Post subject: As an example, 909909. Which could also be read in the opposite direction, 'upside down', as 606606.
The numbers involved in my particular serial number work in both directions. My GUESS is that you read it from top of valve to bottom, as if it were standing on its bell. But, I can't confirm that 100%. LittleRusty Heavyweight Member Joined: 11 Aug 2004 Posts: 9804 Location: Santa Clara, Ca Posted: Mon Sep 09, 2013 3:55 pm Post subject: Ah! They are a good student horn, better than (for instance) the Bach Bundy. They don't play much different from the pro-level Super 20 horns. I wouldn't worry too much about the year. If it plays good for the kid, then it IS good. Jn _________________ toot, toot!
